The COVID pandemic pushed students behind in reading and math.

Test scores fell further than they have in decades. Now, public schools are falling further behind, but it’s for another reason.

Janitors, teachers, and staff are beyond fed up. As more teachers and staff quit, it leaves less hope for public school kids. Market Watch states, “In September, 21,700 school workers left their jobs. This data is according to the latest government data. Workers called it quits include everyone employed at a school, from teachers to janitors at public schools. The total number of K-12 school workers fell to 7,755,400 in September compared to 7,777,100 in August.”

Before the pandemic, there were over 8 million workers. Now, schools are struggling. "Schools have been struggling as they attempt to fill positions across the board," Andrew Spar, President of the Florida Education Association told MarketWatch. "It is a struggle to fill every position in our schools," he continued." So it runs the gamut. Spar said that everyone struggles to fill positions throughout the state and the nation, and it’s all positions in our public schools.”

Public schools still haven’t recovered from the pandemic, especially compared to their private counterparts. Market Watch states, “Public education remains one of the least recovered sectors of the pandemic. Teachers reported high levels of stress during the early days of the pandemic, dealing with long working hours, less pay, and navigating technical difficulties related to remote teaching. “

Labor shortages have contributed to the teacher shortage. Other sectors can raise the wage of employees. However, schools nationwide are grossly underfunded. Many teachers find they earn a higher paycheck and have less stress by heading to another job. While this works out for the teachers, the students continue to suffer and fall further behind.
