Democrat Cori Bush nears the $500,000 mark in campaign cash while maintaining her stringent stand on defending the police department, according to an article by Fox News.

In the third quarter of 2022, Bush paid more than 100K on private security services using campaign funds, according to the Federal Election Commission records. The breakdown notes $71,201.06 paid to Peace Security, a private security company based in St. Louis.

The remaining $30,000 was dispersed for “security services” paid to two individuals: Cortney Merrits and Nathaniel Davis. Merrits and Davis reported their address as being that of the Bush campaign headquarters.

In an interview earlier in the month with “Good Morning America,” Bush did not agree that supporting defunding the police department could hurt progressives before the midterm elections in November. She argues that critics defending the police “spend more time focusing on the word ‘defund’ than they spend on caring and addressing the problem of police violence.”

Bush also said, “The thing about defunding the police is we have to tell the entire narrative.” “People hear ‘defund the police.” But you know what they’ll say? Say ‘reallocate,’ say ‘divest,’ say ‘move.’ But it’s still the same thing.”

“We can’t get caught up on the words,” Bush added. “People spend more time focusing on the word ‘defund’ than they spend on caring and addressing the problem of police in this country.”

Bush appeared on CNN this month and insisted, “there is no data that actually shows that saying ‘defund the police’ cost actual elections.”

CNN’s Don Lemon asked Bush directly, “If you could do it again, would you still double down or use that slogan ‘defund the police?”

Bush responded, “Absolutely.”

KMOC4 in St. Louis discovered that Bush hired two sheriff’s deputies as part of her security detail. According to St. Louis Sheriff Vernon Betts, both were terminated for failing to get prior approval for taking the side job.
