Americans may not support red flag laws like the media would like us to believe.

According to a study conducted by the Crime Prevention Research Center, it turns out that those who claim to be in favor of the laws oppose them when they learn more details about how the laws work. The survey reveals that the polls used to sway voters’ opinions include questions with “really biased” framing, which skews the results drastically.

As per Fox News, a new study shows that Americans’ attitude toward red flag laws dramatically changes from voicing support to showing opposition when the polling question includes more details.

Red Flag laws fall under the category of Extreme Risk Laws and allow loved ones or law enforcement to intervene by asking a court for an order to temporarily prevent someone in a crisis from accessing guns. Guns are taken away from citizens by a judge who determines they are a danger to themselves or others.

Most respond that preventing suicide or harm is a good thing. However, the crucial details involving the process of how the judicial system confiscates a gun are what changes the minds of those answering the polling questions.

The Crime Prevention Research Center survey asked 1,000 likely voters their thoughts and feelings about Red Flag Laws. The initial results showed that 58 percent of people support Red Flag laws when they hear red flag laws help prevent suicides.

However, when those responding are told that mental health experts are not involved in the process. And they further learn that there are no hearings where the defendant presents their case to a judge before their gun rights get taken away; the 58 percent support dropped, leaving 47 percent opposing.

John Lott, President of the Crime Prevention Research Center, expressed his concern to Fox News Digital. He said that framing of polls likely plays a role in other areas of gun control, including expanding background checks, which “Democrats have claimed [are] supported by over 90 percent of the population but have struggled on the ballot in places like Nevada and Maine.”

The Associated Press points out that 19 states and the District of Columbia have used Red Flag laws to remove guns from citizens in 15,049 events since 2020.
