Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for the United Nations Security Council to remove Russia from its ranks during a nationwide address on Tuesday night.

Zelenskyy said, “There will be no peace talks between Ukraine and Russia as long as Vladimir Putin remains Russian leader.”.

The Ukrainian President made these statements after “sham” referendums held in Ukrainian regions in an attempt by Putin to annex more Ukrainian territory.

As the result of a vote that Moscow orchestrated, Russian authorities announced that four partly occupied Ukrainian regions would join Russia. The regions include eastern Donetsk and Luhansk and southern Zaporizhzhia and Kherson.

According to Ukrainian laws, the vote was illegal. The action is also strongly condemned by Western nations. A similar vote took place in 2014 with a Moscow-initiated referendum, leaving some to refer to this latest move as a “Crimea scenario.”

Zelenskyy said, “Russia’s implementation of the so-called Crimean scenario and another attempt to annex Ukrainian territory will mean that there is nothing to talk about with this President of Russia.”

Zelenskyy called for the West to show its support for Ukraine by meeting Putin’s escalation with defense, financial, and sanctions.

If the Russian Federation proceeds and occupies the four Ukrainian regions, Russia would consider Kyiv’s attempts to retake them as an attack on Russia, which could trigger the use of tactical nuclear weapons to retaliate.

Zelenskyy addressed the UN Security Council, saying, “There is only one way to stop this: First, the complete isolation of Russia in response to everything it does. The state cannot remain a permanent member of the UN Security Council with the right of veto if such a state is waging a genocidal policy right now, keeping the world one step away from a radiation disaster.” He continued, saying Russia should not be allowed to be part of any international organizations.

Zelenskyy added that Putin’s threat that he is not bluffing on his use of nuclear weapons “proves that Russia has no right to possess nuclear weapons."

According to the UK Defense Ministry, Putin plans to address both houses of the Russian parliament on Friday. The Kremlin has not confirmed this plan.
