According to USA Today, a USA Today/Suffolk University Poll ran a hypothetical matchup between Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump in Florida.

DeSantis bested Trump 48 to 40 percent. The results constituted a reversal of a poll conducted in February that showed Trump leading DeSantis 47 percent to 40 percent.

DeSantis, currently involved in a re-election contest with former Republican Charlie Crist, has garnered some controversy for his recent shipment of illegal migrants to the playground of the rich, famous, and liberal Martha’s Vineyard. Conservatives have praised the gambit, while liberals have condemned it. The polling results suggest that the former President’s popularity has dimmed in Florida while DeSantis’ has risen.

Does this new polling data mean that Trump is in trouble on the Republican side should he run for a second term, as most political observers expect? Not necessarily, suggests David Paleologos, director of the Suffolk University Political Research Center.

“This doesn’t necessarily mean DeSantis would lead in any other GOP primary state. But it is one data point suggesting a shift in preferences from GOP voters away from Trump and toward DeSantis from Republicans who know both potential combatants quite well.”

The National Review noted that DeSantis had become well known among Republican circles for his use of state power to advance conservative policy goals. His shipping two planeloads of illegal migrants to Martha’s Vineyard to highlight the open borders crisis caused by the Biden Administration is just the latest initiative by DeSantis.

He is often mentioned as a candidate for President in 2024, significantly if Trump declines to run, compared to the former President for his policy. Still, without the drama Trump is said to have caused.

In the meantime, DeSantis has to win re-election as Governor of Florida. His opponent, Charlie Crist, has had his share of problems.

“Crist has come under fire for his confusing record on abortion, historically supporting both a ‘woman’s right to choose and claiming to be ‘pro-life.’ His teachers’ union head running mate Karla Hernández-Mats, a school shutdown proponent and colleague of American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten, has also made him a target.

Political observers expect DeSantis to win re-election handily.
