Ukrainians have one thing to say about the mass burial site discovered in a forest recaptured by Ukrainians from Russian forces. They say, “Russia leaves death!” Ukrainian authorities began recovering bodies Friday. The site, discovered close to Izium, contains hundreds of graves.

AP journalists who visited the burial site on Thursday report seeing graves amid pine trees marked with simple wooden crosses. Most of the graves have numbers that are well into the 400s. At least one mass grave includes a marker indicating the burial site of 17 Ukrainian soldiers.

There may be more. Witnesses and a Ukrainian investigator say some died by gunshot and others by artillery fire, mines, or airstrikes. A resident of Izium, Sergei Gorodko, said that among the hundreds buried are dozens of adults and children killed in a Russian airstrike on an apartment building.

Izium served as a key supply hub for Russian forces until they recently withdrew. After Russia seized the town in March, many died from shelling and still await a proper burial. The city Councilor Maksym Strelinikov told reporters that hundreds of people died during the fighting.

He added that many died from inadequate health care due to destroyed medical facilities. Zelensky said, “We want the world to know what is [really] happening and what the Russian occupation has led to.” He also listed other cities that contain mass graves, including Bucha, Mariupol, and Izium.

On Thursday, the Biden administration pledged another $600 million in military aid to Ukraine. The Biden Administration also adds weaponry as part of the deal. The White House said it was the 21st time the Defense Department has pulled weapons and other equipment off the shelves to deliver to Ukraine.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the aid is “carefully calibrated to make the most difference on the battlefield and strengthen Ukraine’s hand at the negotiating table when the time is right.” He also praised the “admirable grit and determination” of Ukrainians for “defending their homeland and fighting for their future.”
