Students in Swedish schools are known for participating in mock elections. These elections help youth understand the voting process and give a crucial insight into which way they are leaning. The sudden shift in views is going to surprise you.

According to Breitbart.com, “Students in high schools across Sweden are increasingly supporting right-wing parties. This is according to the results of this year’s school elections. Elections saw the conservative Moderates and the populist Sweden Democrats account for 48 percent of the overall vote.”

Breitbart stated, “The voting results, according to political scientist Marja Lemne of Södertörn University, were 'surprising.' The academic noted that the Social Democrats have struggled in recent years trying to attract support from young people.”

The Green Party also did surprisingly poorly in the mock election. Per Breitbart, “Despite Sweden being the home country of famed environmental activist Greta Thunberg, the Swedish Green Party performed poorly in the school election, getting just 4.69 percent, barely above the barrier to enter the Swedish parliament and down from 10.2 percent in the last school election in 2018.”

This news comes alongside the information that Sweden’s prime minister has resigned due to a loss in the recent election. According to BBC, “Magdalena Andersson’s center-left bloc lost narrowly to a bloc of right-wing parties, 176 seats to 173, with 99% of the votes counted.” A recount is standard procedure in Sweden, but the country will see a new government.

BBC stated, “Moderate Party leader Ulf Kristersson will form a government. His right-wing grouping includes the Sweden Democrats, a far-right party that has campaigned against rising gang shootings. It is a huge blow to Andersson’s Social Democrats, which gained votes compared to the last election and remain Sweden’s largest party.”

While this might be a massive blow to one party, it is also a sign of a change coming to Sweden. Right-wing parties are now at an advantage in parliament and remain popular among the youth, which signals how future elections will turn out.
