Where We Stand: Takeaways From Final Primaries

The final two state primaries of the year took place Tuesday. Voters in New Hampshire and Rhode Island decided which candidates will face off for each party in November for Senate, House, and Governor seats.

Some races dragged into the following day with races too close to call. However, other races have clear winners for both parties.

The results left Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) on pace to face GOP retired Army Brig. Gen. Don Bolduc in the New Hampshire Senate race. Bolduc is an outspoken Trump supporter who believes the 2020 election’s legitimate winner is Donald Trump.

Also, in New Hampshire, Governor Chris Sununu won the GOP nomination in his bid for re-elected governor. Sununu runs as a Republican, but he is not a Trump-backed conservative. Contrastly, According to Politico, Sununu has mocked the former President and goes so far as to call him “f****** crazy."

Former Trump White House aide Karoline Leavitt won over ex-State Department official Matt Mowers for the GOP nomination in New Hampshire’s House race. Big names like House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanic, Sen. Ted Cruz, and Rep. Jim Jordan backed Leavitt.

Leavitt will face Democratic incumbent Rep. Chris Pappas in November.

A winner in the crowded Rhode Island governor race emerged as Gov. Dan McKee (D-RI). In November, he will seek election to a full term. McKee did not get elected to the position he currently holds as the incumbent. He was elevated to the status from his lieutenant governor post after Gina Raimondo stepped down to join the Biden Administration.

McKee will face Republican nominee Ashley Kalus in November.

Treasurer Seth Magaziner won the Democratic nomination for the state’s 2nd Congressional District in Rhode Island. He will face Republican Allan Fung in November. Fung hopes to flip the seat for the first time in 30 years.
