Why Did New Yorkers Have To Pay Double For Their COVID Tests?

As the COVID-19 virus wreaked havoc across the nation, New Yorkers paid more than the rest for their COVID-19 tests. It simply didn’t add up.

However, sources have pointed out that the government’s decisions led to those higher prices for New Yorkers. In particular, a Hochul donor received over $6 million in payments from the state.

According to Syracuse.com, “Last December, Gov. Hochul’s administration received an offer to buy approximately 26 million at-home Coronavirus tests from a distributor in New Jersey. The CEO of this distributor happened to be a major campaign donor to the governor.”

The article, written by Chris Braggs, further pointed out that “The price offered by Digital Gadget’s CEO Charlie Tebele was $13 per test. This price is far higher than other companies were proposing for similar tests. The administration had just approved a deal with another firm to buy 5 million tests for $5 each.”

It turns out that Charlie Tebele is an avid supporter of Hochul. Braggs wrote, “The Times Union reported in July that Tebele and his family had donated nearly $300,000 to Hochul’s campaign.

This amount included $70,000 donated before last winter. Last winter, Hochul’s administration signed two purchase orders to buy $637 million in tests. Tebele subsequently hosted a campaign fundraiser for Hochul in April.”

This isn’t the only time that Hochul has engaged in shady deals. According to the New York Post, “Hochul raised eyebrows by backing a Penn Station overhaul that would potentially direct more than $1 billion in tax breaks to Vornado Realty Trust after its head, Steve Roth, gave the maximum $68,700 to her campaign in December.”

According to the NY Post, these are just two of several instances. Republicans are declaring that the public deserves answers. The money spent on these tests profits the company, which funds her campaigns. It’s not the responsibility of the people to support a corrupt political campaign.
