Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, announced in an interview published over the weekend that President Joe Biden is not going to run for a second term in office.

Maloney’s comments, which were made throughout an interview at the beginning of the month with The New York Times Editorial Board, come as recent polling reveals that a strong majority of Americans are concerned with Biden’s mental fitness for office.

When questioned, “Should President Biden run again,” Maloney responded, “Off the record, he’s not running again.”

The Times immediately replied, “Not off the record. On the record.”

“On the record?” Maloney answered. “No, he should not run again.”

Bloomberg News reported this week that Biden was planning to launch his re-election bid after the forthcoming midterm elections even though surveys have discovered that even an overwhelming majority of Democrats — 75% — do not want him to run again.

When questioned last month throughout an appearance on ABC’s “The View” on whether Biden “intends to run in 2024,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded by claiming that Biden is running.

“So let me just say this and the president has been asked this question multiple times. So have I,” she argued. “The president intends to run in 2024. That is something that he, again, has said multiple times. It is so far away right now. It is a long time away and what we are going to focus on, on how we continue to deliver for the American public today, and the next day and what we have been doing the past 18 months. I will say this from that same poll that you are reading off of, is that in a head-to-head, the president beats Donald Trump.”

Maloney thoruhgout a primary debate earlier this month against Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) announced she did not think Biden would run again and then apologized the next day.

“Mr. President, I apologize,” Maloney stated on CNN. “I want you to run. I happen to think you won’t be running, but when you run or if you run, I will be there 100%. You have deserved it.”

“You are a great president, and thank you for everything you’ve done for my state and all the states and all the cities in America,” she continued. “Thank you, Mr. President.”

Meanwhile, The I&I/TIPP Poll, conducted online from Aug. 2-4 among 1,335 adults nationwide, reveals that a 59% majority now say they are “very concerned” (36%) or “somewhat concerned” regarding Biden’s mental health.

That compares with only 39% declaring they are “not very concerned” (18%) or “not at all concerned” (21%). Just 2% of respondents said they were “not sure.” The poll has a margin of error of +/-2.8 percentage points.
