Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis welcomed the backing of Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Wednesday.

DeSantis was revealing the Florida State Guard throughout a press conference when a reporter questioned him regarding Musk’s endorsement.

“I’m focused on 2022, but with Elon Musk, what I would say is I welcome support from African Americans. What can I say?” DeSantis announced to a laughing crowd.

DeSantis is facing one Republican competitor, John Joseph Mercadante, in Florida’s August primary. There are presently five Democratic candidates competing to be the Democratic nominee.

Arizona Republican senatorial candidate Blake Masters met backlash when he referred to Musk as “our country’s richest African American entrepreneur” throughout a television segment last year.

Musk’s dad is South African. He was born in Pretoria and briefly attended Pretoria University before transferring to Queen’s University in Ontario, where his maternal grandparents and mother are from. Musk ultimately received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He has since become a naturalized citizen.

Musk tweeted early Wednesday in response to a Twitter user questioning whether he would vote for a Republican presidential candidate in 2024. While Musk’s first response was “to be determined,” when pressed on who he was leaning toward, Musk replied, “DeSantis.”

Leading up to the 2020 election, Musk backed Democratic candidate Andrew Yang of New York. Musk now thinks “DeSantis has a better chance of winning” than Yang, according to a tweet.

The CEO further recently voted for Republican House of Representatives candidate Mayra Flores in Texas’s 34th Congressional District’s special election.

Flores won the contest for the congressional seat by beating Democrat Dan Sanchez. The district had long been a stronghold for Democrats.

In his early morning Twitter postings, Musk, 50, announced he backed Democrat Andrew Yang in 2020 though that “DeSantis has a better chance of winning.” He announced that he’s mulling “creating a ‘Super Moderate Super PAC’ that supports candidates with centrist views from all parties.”

In May, Musk declared that he would vote for Republican candidates in the midterm elections, and in June, he announced he prefers “more centrist candidates being elected.”

The business tycoon struck a $44 billion deal in April to take over Twitter. The transaction is “on hold,” according to Musk, as he waits for more information on the number of fake accounts on the social media platform. Musk announced he plans to make the platform more friendly toward free speech.
