The White House wrote: As part of her role addressing the root causes of migration from Central America, Vice President Harris announced seven new commitments as part of the Call to Action she launched on May 27 for businesses and social enterprises to make new, significant commitments to sustainably address the root causes of migration by promoting economic opportunity. Commitments announced today include those from CARE International, Cargill, Grupo Mariposa, Parkdale Mills, PepsiCo, JDE Peet’s, and PriceSmart.

In addition, Mastercard, Microsoft, and Nespresso—who announced initial commitments in May—announced action in the region. As a result, businesses and social enterprises have invested more than $1.2 billion in response to the Vice President’s launch of the Call to Action.

Castro, wife of former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya, was elected as the first female President last year. Her opponent, National Party candidate Nasry Asfura, conceded to Castro a number of days later.
Harris made history in January when she became the first female, first black, and first South Asian American Vice President in the history of the United States.

The visit will be Harris's second visit to Central America. She visited Guatemala and Mexico in June.
President Biden tasked Harris with tackling the increase in migrants crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in March, which at the time included a spike in unaccompanied minors. That position includes overseeing diplomatic efforts involving the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.
