The Yankees have assigned a new manager, Rachel Balkovec. Notably, she is going to become the first female manager in minors.

Rachel Balkovec has previously demonstrated the possibility of breaking the barriers by her own example when she became the first full-time female hitting coach within an MLB organization. However, currently, she is about to reach a new astounding goal and get the job position no other woman had before her.

Rachel is a young and successful 34-year-old woman, who is soon expected to be named a new manager for the Yankees’ Low-A affiliate in Tampa as the season starts. What is so unusual about this news is the fact that Balkovec is going to become the first female in charge of an affiliated minor league team.

Rachel, for sure, is not new to all this, since she spent the last two seasons working as hitting coach in the Yankees’ rookie-level Florida Complex League. A year ago, she used to be the first-base coach for the All-Star Futures Game in Denver, where she was the first woman to have ever gotten this position. Speaking of her groundbreaking achievements, Balkovec says it is all a great ‘responsibility,’ that she is not going to take lightly. According to the statement Rachel gave last summer:

“I think about it literally every single day. There’s not a day that doesn’t cross my mind and think about my actions. … Everything I went through early in my career, I had some trouble getting in, things along the way that have happened, makes it worth it when you know that you’re making change like that. … It’s definitely something I don’t take lightly.”

Rachel comes from Omaha, Nebraska, where she served as a strength and conditioning coach in the minor leagues for the Cardinals and Astros before starting to work with the Yankees. Balkovec has, as well as that, coached the Dutch national team, working as their skill acquisition coach and worked in the Australian Baseball League. Back in 2019, Rachel told the press:

“I have a special interest in biomechanics and understanding how the body moves and applying certain things, like for example, if there is a restriction in movement can they spot those types of things. How is that going to affect their swing mechanics and the ability to get something done in a game situation.

“Also, the visual side of things, what are the best strategies of things picking up the ball for recognizing a pitch? There are two sides of it, and I am not sure which one is more important at this point, but I am leaning more to the visual aspect not very many people are diving into I think at this point. It’s two-fold, understanding the body from a very base level and how it applies to the swing and action.’’
