Did Washington County Really Decline Snow Removal Help Due To Mandates?

The Washington State Department of Transportation denied the help of local county officials in removing snow from a passageway that was blocked because the workers were unvaccinated.

Officials from Kittitas County announced there was significant snowfall on January 5-6 that blocked the Snoqualmie Pass for 90 hours, stopping supply chains from reaching the county. In order to assist in clearing the pass, the county reached out to Washington state to help, which was denied because the workers could have decided not to be vaccinated.

"Washington State informed Kittitas County they could not accept this assistance due to Kittitas County not mandating the COVID-19 vaccination for County employees," a press release from the county announced. "The Kittitas County Board of Commissioners is extremely disappointed with the States' position to refuse assistance."

The state entered an agreement with Kittitas County in November out of a need for more workers. Rather than honoring the agreement, the state transportation agency decided to hire a private company to assist because of the county's choice not to issue a vaccine mandate for its employees.

In their release, Kittitas said their board of commissioners was disappointed in the state's refusal. They added the following quotes from several commissioners.

"During these times, we need to be able to put differences aside and work to support one another," states Commissioner Laura Osiadacz. "It needs to be neighbors helping neighbors and lending a hand to get the work done."

Commissioner Cory Wright shares, "This county is ready, as always, to put all hands on deck to solve this problem. It's time for logic and leadership to overcome ideology and allow skilled equipment operators working alone in their cabs to get this job done."

"I'm extremely proud of the work being done by our Public Works Department to be able to clear roads and be in a place to be able to lend a helping hand to the State. It is unfortunate given the circumstances an agreement could not have come to fruition because we all want what is best for our community. At this time an agreement has not been reached," states Commissioner Brett Wachsmith.

"On Tuesday Jan. 11, Kittitas County Public Works reached out about clearing State Route 903 near the small town of Ronald in unincorporated Kittitas County," the department tweeted Wednesday. "County crews informed WSDOT they could not meet the vaccination declaration required of all interlocal agreements and contracts with Washington state agencies."

All state employees were required to be completely vaccinated by October or face termination. According to the press release, the state mandate forced 48 employees within Kittitas County to be terminated.
