Michaela Jae "Mj" Rodriguez grew to be the first transgender actor or actress to win a Golden Globe Sunday.

Rodriguez, a biological male who identifies as a woman, brought home the award for "Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Drama" for her performance as Blanca in the FX show Pose.

According to a report, Blanca is a housemother and nurse on the show.

The award is the first for the show, which premiered in 2018 and has been praised by the LGBT community for having the most comprehensive transgender cast in a scripted series.

Rodriguez was previously recognized as the first transgender actor selected for a lead acting Emmy, though the show's cast has been outspoken regarding their lack of awards in the past.

"Something about trans people not being honored on a show about trans ppl who created a culture to honor ourselves bc the world doesn't," Indya Moore, who plays Angel Evangelista on Pose, previously posted to Twitter from an account that has since been deleted. "Let's call it cognitive dissonance."

Rodriguez celebrated the win as a landmark occurrence on social media.

"Wow! You are talking about a sickening birthday present! Thank you! This is the door that is going to open the door for many more young talented individuals," Rodriguez announced in an Instagram post. "They will see that it is more than possible. They will see a young Black Latina girl from Newark, New Jersey who had a dream, to change the minds others would WITH LOVE. LOVE WINS. To my young LGBTQAI babies WE ARE HERE the door is now open now reach the stars!!!!!"

The performer also praised the other nominees.

"To the nominees we are Queens," Rodriguez posted. "I'm so happy to share space with you! Each and every last one of you women are phenomenal."

In a 2020 opinion piece for the Television Academy, Rodriguez wrote regarding the career challenges she faced as an Afro-Latina and called for more representation of Black and Latino communities behind and in front of the cameras, pressing the Academy to give marginalized groups a seat at the table and recognize their hard work, art, and talent.

Rodriguez made history last summer when she grew to be the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for a lead acting Emmy in a full-length series, an award she eventually did not win.

In a 2018 interview with NPR, Rodriguez described her character as "this rambunctious, very, very nurturing, compassionate, a little bit hardheaded, but ambitious spirit." She spoke regarding the parts of Blanca's experience that bore similarities to her own, like being excluded from their community though choosing to move forward and lift others up.
