China's anti-corruption agency has threatened Walmart Inc. with a customer boycott, accusing it of "stupidity and short-sightedness" for removing Xinjiang-sourced products from its Sam's Club online app in reaction to religious minorities' forced labor and the extermination of Uyghur Muslims.

According to Reuters, the Chinese Communist Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection accused Walmart and its Sam's Club franchise of boycotting Xinjiang items and attempting to "muddle over" the problem by neither responding to concerns or issuing a comment.

“To take down all products from a region without a valid reason hides an ulterior motive, reveals stupidity and short-sightedness, and will surely have its own bad consequences,” In response to Walmart Inc.'s conduct, the Chinese Communist Party's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection stated on its website.

The backlash in China has eluded both Walmart and Sam's Club. Walmart Inc.'s decision came after President Joe Biden signed a bill into law on Dec. 23 prohibiting imports from Xinjiang due to concerns about forced labor.

China's warning comes following reports on Chinese social media that products originating in Xinjiang were unavailable on Walmart and Sam's Club's online stores.

The U.S. government labeled China’s treatment of the Uyghurs as a “genocide” During the Trump administration's closing days, the designation was upheld by the Biden administration.

“For the past several years, China has been continuously arresting Uyghur people and placing them in ‘re-education camps,’” China Aid, based in the United States, said in a statement released in June 2020. “Chinese authorities claimed these camps provide vocational training for Uyghur people. However, camp survivors reported being starved, tortured, forced to study pro-government propaganda, and made to do extensive labor with little to no pay.”

The Chinese government has always maintained that Uyghur and other Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang area have been unfairly imprisoned. However, in 2019, documents known as "The China Cables" were leaked to news organizations, revealing the ideological objectives and structure of such detention institutions.

The data were released to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, a group that collaborated with 17 news organizations, including the BBC and The Guardian. A nine-page document allegedly sent out to authorities administering the camps by then-deputy-secretary of the Xinjiang Communist Party, Zhu Hailun, in 2017 was included in the leak.

According to the BBC at the time, the letter stated that Xinjiang detention centers should be run as high-security prisons with harsh punishments and no escapes.
