In a survey published on Tuesday, Joe Biden's disapproval rating hit a new low of 56 percent as he enters the new year under fire for his handling of COVID and the economy.

The figure is the worst of his presidency and continues the downward trend of the past year.

It comes in the latest installment of a CNBC/Change Research survey, which discovered that his disapproval rating began at 49 percent in April before growing to 54 percent in September and again hitting its new high among voters surveyed in December.

His approval rating has moved in the opposite direction. It now stands at 44 percent, down from 46 percent in September and 51 percent in April.

This week the White House has attempted to head off the crises.

On Monday, Biden met with ranchers and farmers in an attempt to tackle high food prices - a key part of the inflation woes faced by consumers - and on Tuesday he offered an update on the pandemic response, attempting to comfort Americans that the country was well-equipped to ride out the Omicron surge.

The new poll of 1,895 people discovered that 60 percent disapproved of Biden's handling of the economy - a six-point drop from September.

That number rose even more to 72 percent disapproval when people were asked regarding his handling of the price of everyday goods.

And some 55 percent of respondents announced they disapproved of Biden's management of the coronavirus pandemic - an area where the president earlier had an advantage over his Republican rivals.

The numbers will upset Democratic strategists as they prepare for November's midterm elections.

And they follow a string of similar polls indicating that Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are unpopular after a year in power.

A USA Today/Suffolk University poll taken December 27-30 revealed that 40 percent of registered voters approve of Biden's job as President while 54 percent disapprove. The approval rating is a slight 2 percent gain from the exact poll taken in November, though it is still a poor showing at this moment in the presidency.

Harris' job approval rating is at 32 percent, and while that is a horrible rating, it is a 4 percent increase from the November poll where her approval was at just 28 percent.

Biden's approval is the second-lowest of any modern president at this point in his first term – with just the exception of former President Donald Trump. Around this point, Trump's average approval was somewhere around 38 percent at the end of December 2017, according to a FiveThirtyEight tracker.

Of the 1,000 registered voters polled last month, 33 percent state Biden is a powerful leader while a whopping 62 percent say that he is not a strong leader.

The USA Today/Suffolk poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
