After a nine-month study of military resources throughout the world, the Pentagon wants to modernize its bases in Guam and Australia to meet the growing threat from China, officials stated on Monday. However, they stated that no major adjustments to the US military posture were required and that the overall findings would not be published.

The nine-month study aimed to align the country's huge military capabilities with the Biden administration's strategic aims, particularly in response to China's growing assertiveness and military expansion.

"In the Indo-Pacific, the review directs additional cooperation with allies and partners to advance initiatives that contribute to regional stability and deter potential Chinese military aggression and threats from North Korea," It was announced by the Pentagon in a statement.

"These initiatives include seeking greater regional access for military partnership activities; enhancing infrastructure in Australia and the Pacific Islands; and planning rotational aircraft deployments in Australia, as announced in September."

Guam is nearly 3000 miles from China, making it the country's nearest US military base. Plans to build a variant of Israel's 'Iron Dome' missile defense system on Guam were revealed earlier this month, signaling a renewed focus on the island. 'On the Indo-Pacific, we're moving the needle a little,' Mara Karlin, assistant secretary of defense for strategy, plans, and capabilities, told reporters.

The assessment is an attempt to shift away from how previous President Donald Trump made significant decisions affecting the military and allies, often on Twitter and with little discussion inside his own government, which caught officials off guard.

Several times during his presidency, Trump announced that US soldiers would be leaving Syria, and at one point, he ordered a major military reduction in Germany, which Biden overturned.

"We sought to re-establish a strategy informed, coherent decision-making process,"On the condition of anonymity, a senior US defense official briefed reporters.

Despite the fact that the study began months ago, the task has taken on a new urgency in recent weeks. After China tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile that circled the world in August, Washington has been trying to catch up.

A number of top officials have also cautioned that it is using artificial intelligence to steal a march on the United States. According to a spokeswoman for the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, soldiers from Fort Bliss, Texas, flew to the US territory weeks ago to assist with the installation of the Iron Dome. Guam received the equipment earlier this month.

Thousands of rockets launched from the Gaza Strip have been shot down by Israel's Iron Dome in recent years during the ongoing conflict with Palestinians. Iron Dome can defend Israel from crude cruise missiles fired from Gaza, but it is unlikely to be effective against ballistic missiles, such as those China just tested, or other modern rockets.
