"My father Abe, 98, passed away this evening," Schumer said in a post on Twitter with a picture of his family.
"In so many ways—he personified the greatest generation. He took whatever was thrown at him no matter how difficult, did his job, never complained. An amazing husband, parent, grandparent, great-grandparent," Schumer said.
"We love him & will miss him."
Condolences were sent to Schumer from both sides of the political aisle following the news of his father's death.

Abe Schumer and his wife Selma raised three children in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, the Senate majority leader's website states.
Abe Schumer grew up in Utica, N.Y., and served in World War II as a radio operator. After the war, he took over his father's exterminator business. Schumer, who was born on Thanksgiving Day in 1950, told reporters earlier this week in Brooklyn that his father was hospitalized in Long Island undergoing a heart procedure. The father and son shared a close relationship, and Schumer had planned to spend time with him on Thursday.

"My dad, Abe, is 98 years old. He served our country proudly in the Pacific in WWII. And I'm thankful for all he's done for our country and our family," Schumer, 71, tweeted just weeks ago on Veterans Day.
Abe served in Burma during WWII and took over a small exterminating business from his father when he returned to Brooklyn — a job he hated — in order to support his wife Selma, and their three children, Schumer said in congress on his father's 95th birthday, ahead of Father's Day.

"He gave us the idea that we could follow our dreams standing on his strong and weary shoulders," he said.
The younger Schumer remembers his father pacing the floor of the family's home early Monday mornings because he dreaded going to work at the start of the week.

"He struggled his whole life…my brother and sister and I would hear him at 2 am…Sunday night, pacing the floor because he hated going to work," Schumer told James Corden in March after his parents received the coronavirus vaccines and reunited with their great-grandson.

But Schumer said his father was happy once he retired and happiest of all when he was with his great-grandson: "But then he retired and then he became a happy guy. And you know, the greatest joy in his life is his great-grandson. For a year he couldn't see him, then they got the shots, they're over 85, and for the first time he saw him on Sunday — what a joy."
The elder Schumer, who also left two granddaughters and one great-grandson, died after Charles Schumer's 71st birthday on Tuesday.
