Down Syndrome Awareness Month Shines Spotlight On Brave Entrepreneurs

As it is a Down Syndrome Awareness Month, the media went on interviewing some prominent entrepreneurs, who stand behind three businesses, known for their support of people with Down syndrome. As Collette Devitto, the founder of Collettey’s Cookies, told the reporters:

"I love baking.”

What is special about the young entrepreneur, Collette has Down syndrome herself and she has run the business for six years already, offering jobs to many other people with differing abilities. According to Collette:

"I learned baking all by myself. My mom, my sister, my entire family does not know anything about baking. I do."

Collette Devitto is also the founder of the non-profit Collettey’s Leadership organization, which is an institution that provides mentorships and programs for a wide variety of offerings, education, and opportunities.

Unsurprisingly, Collette isn't the only one who managed to succeed in establishing a thriving business. Kylie Kaufman, who also agreed on sharing her story with the press this month, said that she named her jewellery business after her niece who has Down syndrome -- Lotte321. The store raises awareness for Down syndrome.

‘Lotte’ is derived from Charlotte, which is Kylie’s niece's name, and, 321 is an ode to Down Syndrome, which is caused by improper chromatid segregation, which ends up in the body having three copies of the 21st chromosome.

Charlotte is currently five years old and Kylie Kaufman says that according to her ‘vision’, one day the girl would take over Lotte321, she just has to get a little older first.

The next entrepreneurs interviewed are Mark and John Cronin, who started their business back in 2016 and gave it a funny and quite descriptive name of John’s Crazy Socks. The store was created in order to help raise money for charities supporting people with Down syndrome.

In accordance with what John Corning said:

"We have over 3,000 different socks." And Mark adding, explaining: "You know what that means, John owns the largest sock store."

John, who has Down syndrome, noted that his favourite sock has a superhero with Down syndrome on it. Mark Cronin said:

"We have others. We have our unity sock, which is designed to bring people together and get us all talking and, John, you’re giving one pair to every member in Congress, which we have more in common with than we do separating us."

Additionally, it’s important to notice that one of the interviewers, Rachel Campos-Duffy, was joined during the segment by her husband, Sean Duffy, and her daughter, Valentina, who was also born with Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect.
