Dr. Anthony Fauci on Sunday said COVID-19 cases would need to go “way down” before most vaccinated Americans can safely meet publicly indoors without masks.

The White House chief medical adviser said the virus is still actively expanding too much in nearly the entire country to reverse that direction.

“It’s about 95,000 [cases nationwide per day] as the seven-day average. That’s still way too high,’ Fauci told CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked what the amount would have to be to reduce the CDC’s indoor-mask recommendation for even most vaccinated people.

“We want to get way, way down to … I mean, I like to see it well below 10,000 [cases per day] and even much lower than that,” he said.

“But when you’re at 95,000 [cases per day], that’s still a situation where you have a high degree of dynamic circulation of virus in the community.”

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently recommends that fully vaccinated Americans wear masks indoors if they’re in “an area of substantial or high transmission,” mentioning the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant.

According to the latest data, more than 96 percent of the country is currently in an area of “substantial” or “high” transmission.

However, the federal government only requires practicing a mask on planes, buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation and in transportation hubs such as airports and stations.

Fauci has foretold that COVID-19 deaths will decrease this winter following surges across the country caused by the Delta variant.

In an interview with Greta Van Susteren that will be published on Sunday, the White House chief medical advisor was asked whether he foresees there will be another wave of cases this coming winter, the Hill reported.

“Fortunately, right now, over the last few weeks, we’ve seen a turnaround in the slope in both cases and hospitalizations. Deaths are still up, but it’s really flattening, so it’s a lagging indicator,” Fauci said.

“I strongly suspect that you’re going to start seeing the deaths go down similar to the hospitalizations; how quickly they go down and how thoroughly they go down is going to depend a lot on a number of circumstances, which will be influenced by things like the colder weather, people doing things indoors,” he added.

Fauci pressed Americans to wear masks in crowded settings, even if they’re vaccinated and outdoors.

“When you have a lot of infection in the community, even though you’re vaccinated, when you are not home but outside in congregate settings in the public, wearing masks, I think would be very prudent,” he said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said that deaths have been moving downward for the past three weeks, falling from a seven-day rolling average of 1,767 per day on Sept. 15 to 1,418 on Oct. 7.
