“I just love the idea of exploring the unknown,” Harris surged dramatically to a group of five preteens in “Get Curious with Vice President Harris,” a video made to celebrate World Space Week that commemorated Thursday.
But Harris, who was named as chair of the cabinet-level National Space Council in May, tried to explain the value of space travel.
“There’s other things that we just haven’t figured out or discovered yet,” she told the kids as they visited with her at the US Naval Observatory, where the vice president’s official residence is located.

“To think about so much that’s out there that we still have to learn, like, I love that,” she said.
And she swooned with wide-eyed fascination over what her visitors would see through the Naval Observatory’s high-tech telescope.

“You guys are gonna see, you’re gonna literally see the craters on the moon with your own eyes!” she said with excitement, leading to her own peepers for emphasis — even though its holes can be seen with the naked eye.
The video racked up just over 50,000 views in its first two days of publication — but was ridiculed mercilessly on social media by people who were irritated by her excessive facial expressions and baby-talk vocal tone.

“It comes across as a trailer from a movie where the fun and engaging teacher is secretly a serial killer who collects the heads of the children she takes to Space Camp,” mused Joanne Mason on Twitter.

The National Space Council has yet to assemble on the vice president’s watch.

The new position adds yet another job to the veep’s growing portfolio. Harris has been condemned for her obscure act as the nation’s migration leader, a job that President Biden gave her March 24 as illegal immigrants swelled into border states like Texas and Arizona in record-breaking numbers.

While Biden called his No. 2, the former attorney general of California, “the most qualified person” to head that effort, she has done nothing to visit the US-Mexico border to speak with enforcement officers or evaluate crowded detention centers as the flood aggravated.
The White House has tried to replace her tasks, contending that she will focus on correcting the “root causes” of migration and not on the border crisis as a whole.
