Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., declined to sign a letter to denounce the actions of left-wing activists who faced Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., in a public restroom because the statement did not slam her "political views," a report late Wednesday said.

The joint statement, obtained by Axios, calls the episode in which activists cornered Sinema in a university bathroom, filming her while shouting questions, “plainly inappropriate and unacceptable.”

Axios, mentioning emails between Senate Democratic leaders, reported that Sanders, who has been a known advocate of the controversial multibillion-dollar reconciliation bill in Congress, desired the statement to call on Sinema to "drop her opposition to prescription drug reform" and the spending bill.

The report said Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., was the reason behind the joint statement, and he did not take the edits suggested by Mike Casca, Sanders' communications director. Booker’s office did not respond to an email.

Casca, after being dismissed, reportedly wrote, "Sanders will not be signing, so please cut 'Senate Democratic Leadership Team' from the headline." The report pointed out that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and others signed.

Other members of Senate Democratic leadership, such as Schumer, as well as Senators Dick Durbin, Mark Warner, Elizabeth Warren, Joe Manchin, Amy Klobuchar, and Catherine Cortez-Masto, all signed the letter.

The report shows the deep political divide in Washington and the mixed response to disputes involving Sinema. She has faced aggressive protesters in videos that were later posted online. While some slammed protesters for taking things too far, referring to potential threats to the senator's safety, others were more restrained in their responses.

While these prominent Democrats formally denounced the intimidation against Sinema, saying it “crossed a clear line,” President Biden downplayed the incident during an address recently, calling such aggressive tactics a “part of the process.”

President Biden called the actions by the protesters "inappropriate" but said, "It happens to everybody."

Strong signs have appeared that Democrats were blending around Biden’s push for a reconciliation package in the $2 trillion range, a figure that seemed possibly acceptable to Manchin and other centrists with reservations.

While Manchin suggested Wednesday that he might capitulate to Democratic demands and support a reconciliation bill with a price tag closer to progressives’ multi-trillion dollar ballpark, which was his qualm with the original bill, Sinema has held her ground, citing concerns with inflation and an expanding welfare state.

With all Republicans opposed, Biden can’t save the support of a single Democratic senator.
