The remaining 76,000 employees have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine.
Northwell Health announced in a statement obtained by the New York Times that no patient care has been disrupted, and it is now hiring to fill the newly vacant positions.
“Northwell Health is proud to announce that our workforce — the largest in New York State — is 100 percent vaccinated. This allows us to continue to provide exceptional care at all of our facilities, without interruption and remain open and fully operational,” Northwell announced in its statement.

“Northwell has taken a rapid, aggressive approach to move successfully toward full vaccination compliance while maintaining continuity of care and ensuring that our high standard of patient safety is not compromised in any way. We thank the vast majority of our employees who did the right thing and got vaccinated.”

A Northwell spokesperson announced that although it regrets losing employees due to the mandate, having a completely vaccinated workforce is "an important measure in our duty to protect the health and safety of our staff, our patients and the communities we serve."

All employees were asked to be vaccinated by Sept. 27 regardless of whether they interacted with patients. It is unclear what jobs the employees who were fired had.
The state mandate ordering vaccination was established in August, under then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo. His follower, Kathy Hochul, has kept the mandate in place.

Originally, the mandate announced it would enable medical exemptions and not religious ones. Although, the statement was taken to court, and a federal judge filed a temporary halt on the order. The judge will rule on whether religious exemptions are protected under the Constitution on Oct. 12.

Judge David Hurd of the Northern District of New York issued the ruling after 17 healthcare workers filed a lawsuit saying the mandate violated their rights because it did not permit religious exemptions.
The plaintiffs, who included physicians and nurses, insisted that because the New York Department of Health conceded no exemptions for “sincere religious beliefs that compel the refusal of such vaccination,” the mandate broke their rights under the U.S. Constitution and the New York State Human Rights Law.

It appears that their objections focused on their religious conviction to resist any involvement in abortion. The court papers declared that all COVID-19 vaccines use cell lines derived from fetal tissue in their development, production, or testing.
