Within the almost 2,500 page Build Back Better Act, lawmakers have upped the fines for businesses by tenfold for those found in violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSHA), which now covers COVID-19 as a hazard.

On page 168, the $3.5 trillion reconciliation spending bill enables a drastic increase in fines for those that willfully and repeatedly break a section of labor law that deals with workplace hazards, according to the Daily Mail.

The proposed changes raise the fines for "willful and repeated violation" from $70,000 for each breach to $700,000. Serious violations increased from $7,000 to $70,000. Repeated violations will be fined at least $50,000 per violation under the proposed rule, which rose from $5,000.

Businesses that fail to correct the violation within the time period allotted will be fined $70,000 per day that the violation proceeds, upward from $7,000.

The fine increases come after OSHA issued an emergency COVID-19 rule in the Federal Register in June, which joined COVID-19 to the list of possible workplace hazards for healthcare employment and is included under these fines.

On Sept. 9, President Joe Biden stated that all businesses with 100 or more employees have to institute a system where their employees either submit evidence of vaccination or be subjected to weekly COVID-19 testing.

The increase in fines for non compliant companies is drastically higher than the $14,000 fine proposed by OSHA may very quickly force companies to comply, worrying about bankruptcy as the Biden administration pushes for more Americans to get vaccinated.

"The refusal has cost all of us. The refusal to get vaccinated has cost all of us. And I'm moving forward with vaccination requirements wherever I can," Biden announced in a speech last week.

The official estimated nearly 80 million Americans are eligible to receive a shot but have not.

Additionally, the roughly 300,000 educators in head-start programs will be required to be vaccinated.

‘It's simple - if you want to work for the federal government, you must be vaccinated. If you want to do business with the government, you must vaccinate your workforce,’ the senior administration official said.

Negotiations on the $3.5trillion spending bill, which contains progressive measures including programs for social support and green energy investment, are ongoing.

The Budget Committee's vote on Monday saw the bill narrowly pass 20 votes to 17 with Democratic Rep. Scott Peters of California joining Republicans to vote against the bill.

Democrats have been struggling to pass President Joe Biden's economic agenda, including the massive tax and spending bill that would expand education, health care, and childcare assistance, address the climate disaster and make further investments in infrastructure.
