ELON MUSK FIRES BACK AT ROBERT DE NIRO'S SHOCKING TRUMP COMPARISON
Secretary of State Antony Blinken will have a virtual meeting on Friday with his equivalents in Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco, the countries that signed the accord a year ago, according to Axios.
“The event will commemorate the one-year anniversary of the signing of the Abraham Accords and discuss ways to further deepen ties and build a more prosperous region," a senior State Department official told the outlet.
This honor meeting is a public exhibition of advocacy for the crown jewel of the Trump administration’s foreign policy works, and it increases the chance that the Biden administration could keep brokering such agreements.
“We are thrilled to celebrate tomorrow's one-year anniversary of the signing of the Abraham Accords between the state of Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Israel and the Kingdom of Bahrain,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said in a video posted to social media on Tuesday. “We also celebrate the agreement between Israel and the Kingdom of Morocco to normalize relations. We strongly support these agreements and look forward to advancing other opportunities to expand cooperation between Israel and countries around the world.”
“We also hope that as Israel and other countries in the region join together in common effort to build bridges and create new avenues for dialogue and exchange, we are able to make tangible progress toward the goal of advancing a negotiated peace between Israelis and Palestinians,” he added.
The Abraham Accords was signed on Sept. 15 by then-President Donald Trump, then-Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
Former White House senior adviser Jared Kushner, the chief architect behind the Abraham Accords, suggested that these accords could halt if they “are not nurtured” during a Tuesday event in Washington to mark the anniversary, according to the Times of Israel.
Israeli, Emirati, and Bahraini officials were urging the Biden administration for the last two months to have some kind of recognition. Officials from the three countries tell Axios the Biden administration was non-committal and only in recent days suggested holding the virtual meeting.
Biden encouraged the Abraham Accords as a presidential candidate and repeated his support after getting into the office. But the Biden administration was unwilling to use the term “Abraham Accords,” which was directly attached to Trump’s legacy.
Nevertheless, the Biden administration made several actions to maintain the agreements, including by allowing a deal to sell F-35 fighter jets to the UAE to go through and by maintaining Trump's recognition of Moroccan sovereignty in Western Sahara The Biden administration also followed through on a $700 million aid package to Sudan promised by Trump as part of the normalization deal with Israel.
