Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that in just months under President Biden, "American leadership has already walked off the stage" as the world watches the Taliban take charge of Afghanistan, and presented several ways the U.S. can retake credibility among its allies.

Pompeo told "Sunday Morning Futures" host Maria Bartiromo that the Biden administration seems to have returned to Obama-era leadership, leaving U.S. adversaries like Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un to watch "America destroy its alliances."

"It looks like we’re back to Barack Obama, America apologizing, American weakness, and our adversaries not fearing us and our friends not trusting us," the former secretary of state announced.

On Friday, Biden took heat for maintaining throughout a White House speech that he's seen "no questioning of our credibility from our allies around the world" over his handling of Afghanistan, even though British lawmakers openly denounced Biden's handling of the collapse of Afghanistan earlier that week.

The Biden administration has been slammed as being caught flat-footed by the speed of the Taliban takeover and the ensuing turmoil of the troop withdrawal, as thousands of Americans and Afghan allies are still stranded in the war-torn nation.

Though, while Pompeo explained that the "debacle" of an exit from Afghanistan has done "an enormous amount of damage to American credibility," he acknowledged that the U.S. reputation can be rebuilt.

Pompeo proposed that America can confirm its strength on a global level by walking away from negotiations with Iran in Vienna, delivering on defense deals with nations like Taiwan, and working closely with Ukraine to prevent Putin from grabbing more of its territory as Russia did throughout Obama’s administration.

With reports swirling of the Taliban assaulting Americans attempting to get to the airport for evacuations from Kabul, Pompeo announced the Biden administration has to show strength against the Taliban to guarantee the safety of the American citizens.

"Make it very clear that you’re not going to beg the Taliban, you’re not going to implore, not going to plead. You’re not going to pay the Taliban if Americans are harmed as they move to the airport," Pompeo said. "You’re going to go and crush them, put real costs on them."

Pompeo said there’s a “massive disconnect” between what President Biden says is happening in Afghanistan and reports from the ground — as well as from Pentagon leaders — that contradict his allegations.

“It certainly doesn’t appear that he understands, or, perhaps less, he’s just not that interested,” Pompeo said.
