The effort to evacuate thousands of Americans and Afghan citizens following the Taliban’s swift takeover of Afghanistan on Sunday has been marred by confusion and chaos.
Mobs of Afghans stormed Hamid Karzai International Airport on the outskirts of Kabul in a desperate attempt to flee the country. Images showed people running alongside and even clinging to a US Air Force transport plane as it taxied down the runway, some falling to a tragic death.

The deteriorating situation forced the Biden administration to deploy additional troops to Kabul in an attempt to restore order and safety in the capital city.
But Biden, in an interview with ABC News, defended the withdrawal of troops and maintained that no mistakes were made.

“I don’t think it could have been handled in a way that, we’re gonna go back in hindsight and look — but the idea that somehow, there’s a way to have gotten out without chaos ensuing, I don’t know how that happens. I don’t know how that happened,” he said.

As many as 80,000 Americans and Afghans who once worked for the US still need to be evacuated from Kabul amid the botched withdrawal that has been marred by violence and chaos.
The US has evacuated 7,000 from Kabul since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan five days ago but there are still between 60,000 and 80,000 who need to get out.

That includes more than 10,000 Americans, according to CBS News. The Biden administration has so far refused to give an estimate of how many US citizens need to be evacuated.
Two thousand were evacuated within the last 24 hours, Army Maj. Gen. Hank Taylor said Thursday.

He said the military now has enough aircraft to get 5,000 to 9,000 people out a day — depending on how many have been processed.

Trump went on to rip his successor’s handling of the evacuation in a Fox Business interview Wednesday.
“You had to get the people out of there. Can you imagine having your military go home and leaving all those people? That’s called the lamb being led to slaughter,” Trump told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo.

“So your military goes home, and they forgot to let those divisions out, they forgot to protect the embassy,” the former commander-in-chief said about the US military abandoning the US Embassy in Kabul as the Taliban took control of the city.
