Kate Coyne-McCoy, the chief strategist of the Rhode Island Democratic Party, met swift criticism late Monday over a tweet about Sen. Lindsey Graham’s COVID-19 diagnosis.

The Republican from South Carolina—who had been completely vaccinated—stated earlier in the day that he came down with flu-like symptoms on Sunday. He explained that he was diagnosed with the virus on Monday by the House physician. His symptoms are mild and he explained he will be quarantining for 10 days.

"I started having flu-like symptoms Saturday night and went to the doctor this morning. I feel like I have a sinus infection and at present time I have mild symptoms. I will be quarantining for ten days," said Graham.

"I am very glad I was vaccinated because without vaccination I am certain I would not feel as well as I do now," he went on. "My symptoms would be far worse."

Graham, who was vaccinated in December, has long been a proponent of vaccination, saying throughout a visit this spring to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston that "the sooner we get everybody vaccinated, the quicker we can get back to normal."

Coyne-McCoy took to Twitter and posted, "It’s wrong to hope he dies from Covid right? Asking for a friend. #COVIDISNOTOVER #LINDSEYGRAHAM," she posted.

Even at a time when the political divide in the nation appears like it could not get any more difficult, posts hinting at the death of a political opponent seem to pass an imaginary line of civility. Though, individuals who tweet out these posts have often weighed the risks and have decided that they play to their base.

The Rhode Island Democrats and Coyne-McCoy did not immediately respond to after-hours emails. The tweet was originally screen grabbed by a reporter from the Free Beacon.

In March, Rhode Island Public Radio called the hiring of Coyne-McCoy, a certified lobbyist, a "clear signal" that the state’s Democratic Party was determined on moving to the left. The report stated that while she is not the party’s executive director, she "will be the person responsible for leading the party’s political efforts."

When former President Trump was diagnosed with COVID-19 last year, many Democrats appeared to put politics aside and sent the president well wishes.
