According to the New York Post, Berry finished in eleventh place out of twelve competitors, recording a distance of 71.35 meters.
In June, Berry made headlines when she insulted the American flag throughout the national anthem after finishing third in the U.S. Olympic track and field trials in Oregon. Furthermore, she pulled out a back t-shirt that read “Activist Athlete” as she hid her face.
After the trials, Berry explained to reporters that she was “set up” with the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner.
“I feel like it was a set-up, and they did it on purpose,” Berry announced of the anthem being played. “I was pissed, to be honest.”

“The anthem doesn’t speak for me,” Berry added. “It never has. I didn’t really want to be up there. Like I said, it was a setup. I was hot. I was ready to take my pictures and get into some shade.”
“If you know your history, you know the full song of the national anthem,” Berry said on Black News Channel. “The third paragraph speaks to slaves in America — our blood being slain … all over the floor.”

Earlier this week, before she failed to medal, Berry promised to protest against the United States on the medal stand to “represent the oppressed peoples.”
She said, “That’s been my message for the last three years.”

Throughout an interview, after she made it through the qualifying round in Tokyo, Berry insisted that she has “earned the right” to protest.
Berry says that subject also matters to her after her uncle passed away at the beginning of 2021, and her agent died just before the Olympic trials.

“I felt like I was going to quit this sport in February,” she said. “It’s been hard. But overall, I have to be thankful I’m alive, and I’m here, and I made it.”
She continued: “I’m just focused on what I need to do because all those people who hate me, they aren’t here. So they can’t affect me.”

On Sunday, silver-winning shot putter Raven Saunders held her arms in an “X” on the medals podium to represent “the intersection where all people who are oppressed meet.”
The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee on Monday night ruled that Saunders was “respectful of her competitors and did not violate our rules related to demonstration,” USA Today reported.
