Rep. Adam Kinzinger announced Sunday that he expects "a significant number of subpoenas for a lot of people," including members of his own party, over the probe into the Jan. 6 riots at the United States Capitol.

Rep. Liz Cheney and Kinzinger are the two Republicans chosen by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to lead the bipartisan select committee examining the causes and buildup to the tumults earlier this year. Throughout an interview on ABC's This Week, Kinzinger explained that he would even support subpoenaing House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy if needed.

"I would support subpoenas to anybody that can shed light on that — if that's the leader, that's the leader," the Illinois Republican announced. "Anybody with parts of that information, with inside knowledge, can probably expect to be talking to the committee."

"It's going to be a thorough investigation, that's for sure," Kinzinger went on.

The panel examining the attack on the Capitol held its first hearing last Tuesday, witnessing testimony from four police officers who were reacting to the riots.

Throughout the hearing, Kinzinger underscored "I'm a conservative" and made pleas against turning the investigation into a "partisan fight," even as McCarthy marked the two GOP members on the panel as "Pelosi Republicans."

“I never expected today to be quite as emotional for me as it has been,” Kinzinger said as he choked up. “I've talked to a number of you and gotten to know you. I think it's important to tell you right now, though: You guys may, like, individually, feel a little broken. ... But you guys won. You guys held it.”

Arizona Republican Rep. Andy Biggs, chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, has proposed that Cheney and Kinzinger could essentially be spies for the Democrats, remarking that they were appointed by the Democratic House leader.

McCarthy tried to make a resolution with Pelosi to select five of his picks to the Jan. 6 committee though was blocked by Democrats on July 26 following a vote. “Speaker Pelosi’s refusal to seat all five Republican Members directly harms the legitimacy, credibility, and integrity of the Select Committee,” the minority leader wrote in his resolution.

His last-ditch effort came just days after he announced he would pull all of his Republican appointee suggestions on July 21, when Pelosi blocked two of the five GOP appointees from participating.

The Jan. 6 committee will convene virtually before the House breaks for August recess, with additional plans to meet with Justice Department officials next week, according to Chairman Bennie Thompson.
