Michigan state Rep. Jewell Jones, a Democrat, is protecting spending hundreds of campaign dollars at a strip club earlier this year in what he characterized as a "meeting" that justified no further explanation.

Jones, who was elected in 2016 as the youngest representative in state history, reported spending $221 of his campaign funds on March 8 at the Pantheon Club, a gentlemen’s club in Dearborn, according to his campaign finance report reviewed Monday by The Detroit News.

The quarterly campaign expenditure statement lists the purpose as a “constituent meeting to discuss potential economic projects in Inkster.”

Jones revealed to the outlet that the club had a "lounge" environment and "great lamb chops," and that he has to "meet people where they're at" seldom as part of his work.

"No need to explain the transactions," he separately told WDIV-TV. "I noticeably picked up the tab at these meetings. Got to meet the people where they’re at."

According to the admission, Jones spent more than $6,400 this year at restaurants and lounges for what he called "meetings," including $696 at Ferraro's Italian Restaurant & Wine Bar in Las Vegas on March 22, The Detroit News reported.

"While this sort of spending isn't uncommon, sadly, the venue Rep. Jones chose truly pushes the limit of credulity," Simon Schuster, executive director of the nonprofit Michigan Campaign Finance Network, told the outlet.

Jones made public headlines in April after he was charged with drunk driving and he supposedly threatened officers with a phone call to "Big Gretch," citing Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, during his imprisonment. His next hearing in the case is set for August.

Most recently, Jones made headlines after he appeared to praise the release of Bill Cosby as a "good day" after the disgraced comedian’s sexual assault conviction was thrown out by Pennsylvania’s highest court.

Local 4 talked with the Michigan Campaign Finance Network, which defines itself as a nonpartisan nonprofit organization. The executive director said it’s not surprising for lawmakers to use campaign funds to buy dinners within the capacity of their official duties.

He’s indicted of fighting with troopers, supposedly saying that he’d call the governor and that he had a failure of the Michigan State Police budget.

Last week, Jones was in court for breaking his bond. A bond that monitors his alcohol consumption was shut off for nonpayment. The judge informed Jones that if he violated bond again he would be sent to jail.
