The Chinese state-controlled magazine "Naval and Merchant Ships" published an article outlining a three-stage plan to invade Taiwan, including ballistic missiles, fighter jet attacks, and amphibious landings on Taiwan's beaches.

Tensions proceed to flare in the area, as Chinese fighters have been breaching Taiwanese airspace almost every day for months now.

The US and Japan have been reportedly performing joint military exercises, and the magazine article is thought to probably have been a subtle way of responding on China's part, according to The US Sun.

The US is a staunch ally of the nation of Taiwan, and a defensive pact between the two countries was enacted many decades ago, on March 3, 1955. It was followed by a less-intensive agreement called the Taiwan Relations act in 1979, which is still in effect to this day.

China's non-elected head of state Xi Jinping stoked the fires of rhetoric recently, as he announced throughout a recent speech celebrating 100 years of Communism in China: "Resolving the Taiwan question and realizing China's complete reunification is a historic mission and an unshakable commitment of the Communist Party of China,"

China has declined to recognize the existence of Taiwan as an independent country ever since the Communists took over the mainland in 1949, even though Taiwan is recognized as such, and has its own currency, government, military, diplomatic corps and passports.

Meanwhile, Japan's deputy defense minister warned at an event aired on Monday of an increasing threat posed by Chinese and Russian collaboration and said it was necessary to "wake up" to Beijing's pressure on Taiwan and protect the island "as a democratic country."

Speaking to the Hudson Institute think tank, State Minister of Defence Yasuhide Nakayama questioned whether the decision of many nations, including Japan and the United States, to follow a "one-China" policy that has recognized Beijing over Taipei since the 1970s would stand the test of time.

"Was it right?" he asked at the online event, referring to how future generations will judge policymakers on the problem. "I don't know."

Nakayama explained that democratic countries had to protect each other and noted that he had in the past referred to Taiwan as a "red line."

"So we have to protect Taiwan as a democratic country."

Nakayama explained that Japan and Taiwan were geographically close, and continued that if something happened in Taiwan it would affect Japan's Okinawa prefecture, where U.S. forces and their families are based.
