A couple of top travel aids for Vice President Kamala Harris have decided to step down from their jobs in the coming weeks.

Karly Satkowiak, the director of advance, and Gabrielle DeFranceschi, the deputy director of advance, will leave, Harris's office verified to the Washington Examiner.

Their departures were long-expected, an unnamed spokeswoman for Harris said.

Advance workers plan the vice president's travel and work with teams to make venues for Harris's arrival. The government reportedly put out a call for "advance associates," unpaid volunteers who will better manage the vice president's travel.

The vice president has received condemnations for her delay in visiting the southern border and for choosing to visit El Paso, Texas, instead of the Rio Grande Valley.

"I'm sure her planners told her that if you're going to go down to the border, go to something that's safer to go to, that is, politically safer," Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, said Thursday. "The epicenter is down there in the Lower Rio Grande, the lower part of my district down there. If you look at the numbers that are down there compared to El Paso, you're not going to get a true picture of what's happening."

Harris made her first visit as vice president to the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday, where she traveled immigration facilities and met with young women.

Speaking to reporters after her trip, Harris said the border trip strengthened the need to address the root causes of the surge in undocumented migrants from Central America.

“The lack of economic opportunity, very often violence, corruption and food insecurity,” said Harris, “including the fear of cartels, and gang violence.”

“The work that we have to do is the work of addressing the root causes, otherwise we’ll continue to see the effect, what is happening at the border,” she said. “It’s going to require, as we have been doing, a comprehensive approach that acknowledges each piece of this.”

Earlier this year, President Joe Biden tasked Harris with working to address these root causes. In June she visited Guatemala and Mexico, where she delivered a blunt message to potential migrants.

“I want to be clear to folks in the region who are thinking about making that dangerous trek to the United States-Mexico border: Do not come. Do not come,” Harris said at a press conference in Guatemala on June 7. “I believe if you come to our border, you will be turned back.”
