Iran’s state TV is announcing that the country has passed an emergency use of its first domestically developed coronavirus vaccine that could bring the most damaged country in the Middle East closer to immunizing its citizens against COVID-19.

The emergency authorization was approved after the country was faced with problems from carrying enough vaccines.

The TV cites the health minister, Saeed Namaki by saying, “Permission to use the Iranian vaccine COVIran Barekat was issued yesterday.”

Iranian pharmaceutical company Shifafarmed made the vaccine based on the deactivated virus, and the first study of the safety and effectiveness started in late December.

Iran has also said it is working on a vaccine with cooperation from a foreign country. Namaki said that another vaccine, created jointly by Iran and Cuba, will join the country’s vaccine package next week.

Iran’s local vaccine research has gained urgency as officials claim that heavy American sanctions will hinder the Islamic Republic’s mass vaccination efforts. Although Iran maintains routes to vaccines, including through its participation in COVAX, an international action designed to distribute vaccines to countries regardless of their wealth, international banks and financial institutions are unwilling to deal with Iran for fear of American penalties. Under COVAX rules, Iran could at a maximum order enough doses to vaccinate half of its 82 million people.

The COVIran Bareket is made by the pharmaceutical company Shifafarmed. It was created based on a deactivated virus, according to the AP, and the first study of its safety and effectiveness was conducted in December. Iran has been struggling to get access to vaccines and has blamed U.S. sanctions on the country. It has had some access to vaccines through the international COVAX program designed to help poorer countries get their peoples vaccinated.

Namaki said the country is working on another vaccine that would be jointly produced with Cuba.

On Tuesday, the daughter of a high-level state official became the first to receive a shot of COVIran Barekat.

Tayyebeh Mokhber received the injection at a ceremony attended by Minister of Health Saeed Namaki and Vice President for Science and Technology Sorena Sattari, among others.

“I’m happy, not just because I’m the first person, but because this scientific process progressed so well in my country,” said Mokhber, who is the daughter of Mohammad Mokhber, head of the Headquarters for Execution of Imam Khomeini’s Order (Setad), a state-run entity looking after local coronavirus vaccine efforts.

Two other recipients of the vaccine on Tuesday were also senior Setad-affiliated executives. “The message of this action was that we don’t think we’re different from other people and we have brought our own family to test this vaccine,” Namaki said.
