In what was by far the most contested outcome from either party Tuesday night in Virginia’s primaries for the House of Delegates, attorney, and Trump supporter Wren Williams removed seven-term incumbent Charles Poindexter by a landslide — 63%.

Williams, former chairman of the Patrick County Republican Party, was very much engaged in Trump’s challenge of the outcome of the 2020 election.

He battled proudly on his role in the challenge to Joe Biden’s election and slammed Poindexter for not helping with him in that work.

At a time when experienced politicians are falling out of favor with the public, Poindexter, 79, suffered from his long-term incumbency.

Along with matching himself closely with Trump, Williams campaigned as a hard-core conservative. He championed local control of education, promised to take on insurance companies for "profiting from our pain," and said it was time to "push back on the liberal pro-abortion agenda."

“The people here, they just mandated change and wanted somebody who was going to be an advocate and a fighter on their behalf,” said Wren Williams. “They wanted somebody who was more passionate and energetic.”

A political newcomer, Williams, 32, in November will face another newcomer, Democratic candidate Bridgette Craighead, 30, a Rocky Mount business owner who founded the county’s Black Lives Matter chapter.

Williams said that Craighead’s political views won’t be a good match for the 9th. “This entire district is just heavily, heavily conservative.” “I want to help improve lives for everyone in the 9th district,” Craighead said. “Nothing changes with the outcome tonight, I’m campaigning for the people that have not been represented, that want to see new leadership in Richmond.”

Williams’ goal isn’t just to win his own election in November, but to wage a broader Republican campaign to take back control of the House of Delegates. “I’ve got my eye on several winnable seats. And I’m going to play a big role in making sure we flip them.”

Williams served as chairman of the Patrick County Republican Committee from 2018 until he launched his campaign in February. He led the committee from near-defunct status to establishing a 3-2 Republican majority on the county board of supervisors, he said. A member of the Republican National Lawyers Association, Williams volunteered in 2020 to travel to Madison, Wisconsin, and join a team of lawyers representing Trump during vote recounts.

Williams has said he reviews election security as a priority, and that an overpowering majority of residents of all three counties that he met face to face during his campaign coincided with him. “That was one of the reasons that I came out on top,” Williams said.
