Maryland's Republican Gov. Larry Hogan announced that the Republican Party is attacking itself over testing members' commitment to former President Donald Trump.

Hogan, a frequent Trump critic, and possible 2024 presidential hopeful backed Rep. Liz Cheney over House Republicans' impending vote to remove Cheney of her leadership status.

"It’s sort of a circular firing squad where we’re just attacking members of our own party instead of focusing on solving problems," Hogan announced Sunday on NBC's Meet the Press.

"It bothers me that you have to swear fealty to the dear leader or you get kicked out of the party. It just doesn’t make any sense," the governor went on.

Cheney, who voted to impeach Trump following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, endured a different effort to oust her as conference chairwoman earlier this year after her vote, though mounting frustrations between the Wyoming Republican and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy have put her back beneath the weight.

On Sunday, McCarthy dismissed the idea that Cheney's distance from other members is because of her opposition to Trump.

"Any member can take whatever position they believe in," McCarthy told Fox News's Maria Bartiromo. "That’s what the voters vote on, the individuals, and they make that decision. What we're talking about, it’s a position in leadership. We are in one of our biggest battles ever for this nation and the direction, whether this next century will be ours. As conference chair, you have one of the most critical jobs of the messenger of going forward."

McCarthy, though, has explained he would support New York Rep. Elise Stefanik to follow Cheney. Stefanik, 36, is a Trump loyalist who garnered national recognition throughout Trump's first impeachment hearings over her vocal opposition.

Yet there’s pushback from some on the Right, who insist that Stefanik’s voting record has not been conservative enough and at times has bucked Trump on important matters, including whether to certify all of the 2020 presidential election results and ending Trump’s border wall emergency declaration.

It’s not clear whether the complaints will amount to sufficient opposition to hinder Stefanik, though they highlight continued strife within the GOP as it fights to define itself in the post-Trump era.

Influential conservative blogger Ryan James Girdusky, no fan of Cheney, denounced the ascension of Stefanik, who he called “a swamp creature,” on Twitter. He stressed that she changed her vote from disputing the Arizona presidential election results on Jan. 6 to allowing those results.

Conservatives further say Stefanik’s voting record is not conservative enough. Stefanik voted to override Trump’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act, for example, and split with Trump on several other key measures. She voted with the president about 67% of the time, according to an analysis by the website FiveThirtyEight.
