On Sunday, two Carnival cruise ships returned to a popular Texas port for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, when it halted the cruise industry more than a year ago.

According to the press, cruise ships, the Carnival Breeze and Carnival Vista, arrived at the Port of Galveston. This occasion couldn’t but excite local business owners, who fully rely on sales from tourists, who arrive to the city before heading out to sea. When the Carnival Breeze and Carnival Vista arrived around the afternoon, the scores of locals lined the docks to welcome them back to port. The vessels were last in port in April 2020, when the pandemic brought cruises to a halt worldwide.

Several cruise ships were particularly hard hit in the opening weeks of the pandemic as the virus spread rapidly in the close confines. Port officials say that they hope the return of the ships to Galveston will help spur the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and political leaders to act faster to allow cruise ships to return to sea.

Only a couple of weeks ago, industry leaders and politicians wrote a letter to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in order to urge them to, eventually, lift sail restrictions and allow cruises to accept passengers again.

The Port of Galveston page on Facebook posted the following message:

As we all know, cruises in the United States have been suspended for more than a year due to the pandemic. However, apparently, the return is just around the corner, since the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention made an announcement last week, claiming that cruise lines could resume operations by the middle of July.

Importantly, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, ships can begin limited sailings with customers, in case 98%of its crew and 95% of its passengers are fully vaccinated.
