The manager of the Democratic Party in a Texas county stepped down Tuesday, days after he defined Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) as an “oreo,” leading to an objection among Republicans.

Now-former Lamar County Democratic Party chairman Gary O’Connor, who is white, told the Washington Examiner in a report that he was “deeply and sincerely sorry” for using the “racist term” against Scott, one of three black senators and the only black Republican.

“It was insensitive and I have embarrassed myself and my party by its use,” O’Connor’s statement read.

O’Connor used the term, mainly used to describe a black person seen to be acting as an ordinary white person, on his personal Facebook page after Scott passed the formal Republican response to President Joe Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress last week.

“I had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear he was little more than an oreo with no real principles,” read the post, which was later deleted.

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott led the calls for O’Connor to leave his role and excuse to Scott, as well as for the Texas Democratic Party to attack the former county chairman.

Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas), whose district includes part of Lamar County, shredded O’Connor’s comment Friday as “abhorrent, insulting and unforgivable.”

O’Connor was not the only person to aim Scott with such vitriol. Twitter allowed the phrase “Uncle Tim” to trend for hours after his comments, in which Scott maintained that America “is not a racist country.” Twitter ultimately blocked the phrase from trending, but tweets containing the term, a revised version of the “Uncle Tom” term, were allowed to stay up.

It wasn’t until 10 a.m. Thursday that the social media giant halted the attacks from developing in its Trends.

Scott, in an appearance Thursday on “Fox & Friends,” slammed the use of the slur by his detractors, adding “you cannot step out of your lane according to the liberal elite left.”

“Intolerance so often comes from the left with words like ‘Uncle Tim’ and the N-word being used against me by the left, and last night what was trending on social media was ‘Uncle Tim,’ ” said Scott, a second-term senator from South Carolina.

“It is stunning in 2021 that those who speak about ending discrimination want to end it by more discrimination.” He added, “The left has doubled down that they are going to, not attack my policies, but they’re literally attacking the color of my skin.”
