Three Republican lawmakers on Wednesday requested the acting inspector general for the State Department to examine if John Kerry, the special representative for climate and former secretary of state, delivered Israeli secrets to Iran.

In a message to Acting Inspector General Diana Shaw, Reps. Ann Wagner, R-MoAndy Barr, R-Ky. and Lee Zeldin, R-NY pressed a full probe into Kerry's "relationship with Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif and determine whether his security clearance should be revoked or not."

The letter comes just days after other Republican lawmakers called on Kerry to step down amid the same accusations.

"Iran is a serious threat to Israel, a bulwark of democracy and stability in the Middle East. It is in our national security interest to stand by our strategic ally -- not sell it out to our adversaries," the lawmakers wrote.

Additionally to calling for an investigation by the inspector general, the three legislators asked in the letter whether the State Department was aware of the accusations before media reports announced the details encircling the leak. They also asked about awareness of Kerry's entanglement in re-entering the Iran nuclear deal, and whether Iran has fought against Israel since the accusations became public.

"John Kerry and Joe Biden have proven to be pro-Iranian before by championing the failed Iran Nuclear Deal, but this type of betrayal of a staunch ally is simply unconscionable," Barr said.

The lawmakers requested the inspector general respond to the letter, which was first received by the Daily Caller, by May 12.

Zarif made the comments in question during a conversation with economist Saeed Leylaz, according to The New York Times. The recording, however, was not meant to be published, which Zarif can reportedly be heard mentioning a number of times.

Kerry served as Obama’s secretary of state from 2013 to 2017. The lawmakers also requested answers to what role Kerry played in the formulation of the Biden administration’s policy on re-entering the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the nuclear deal between the U.S. Iran, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom, and if the department is aware of any “follow-on attacks” made by Iranian proxies against Israel or its forces after Kerry’s alleged conversation with Zarif. Zeldin called the allegations against Kerry “massively alarming.”

“If it’s proven that Kerry actively undermined one of America’s staunchest allies, he needs to resign from the Biden administration immediately and have his security clearance revoked,” he added.

Kerry denied the allegations on Monday, calling them “equivocally false” and writing on Twitter “This never happened - either when I was Secretary of State or since.”
