Videos on social media show Canadians reportedly standing at the United States-Canada border while carrying an upside-down Canadian flag and using lights to Morse code “SOS” in answer to the "tyrannical" Ontario government's lockdown orders.

“We are down here in Niagara Falls, Ontario. We have a flag upside down in distress. And we are about to Morse code 'SOS' across the border to our neighbors. We are asking for help. We are hostages in our province now,” one unidentified man says, adding that the Ontario government is “tyrannical.”

Marie Oaks, a writer, also wrote on her Twitter: "Canadians in Niagara Falls, Ontario are signaling for help in the U.S.-Canada border tonight using lights to Morse code “SOS” & an upside-down Canadian flag. An upside-down flag is a universal signal of distress. The man in the video says 'we are hostages in our province now"

The videos come after the Ontario government published severe new rules in response to the coronavirus on Friday, including shutting down playgrounds, confining church services, banning outdoor meetings with people from multiple families, and enabling police officers to hold people in public, ask them why they are out of their homes, and potentially write tickets.

The restrictions were faced with intense reproach and prompted the government to step back the lockdowns on Saturday, most prominently rescinding allowing police to ask people who are outside of their homes.

“We're going to Morse code 'SOS' across the border, and somebody even notified the Border Patrol. And they are waiting for this message. So this is what it's all about, guys. Take action. Take action. Do more than just protest,” the man in the video ads.

Footage of the border also caused a flood of denunciations aimed at Canada and its government for the strict restrictions, which came as other countries removed lockdowns and stay-at-home orders.

“I’d like to remind everyone that Trudeau was the standard 'Coexist' Leftist a year ago. Now stormtroopers are raiding churches and Canadian citizens are living in a police state,” conservative radio show host Jesse Kelly tweeted. “It happens fast, folks. It happens real fast. They’re all an inch away from becoming tyrants.”

Other places in Canada show government officials criticize orders in recent days, including in a viral video of a Christian pastor yelling at police officers to leave his church when they tried to interrupt service during Holy Week.

“Nazis are not welcome here. … Do not come back, you Nazi psychopaths. Unbelievable sick, evil people. Intimidating people in a church during the Passover. You Gestapo, Nazi, communist fascists! Don’t you dare come back here,” Artur Pawlowski can be heard shouting at the officers, who reportedly did not have a warrant.
