Two Minnesota National Guard members on duty in the Twin Cities were wounded early Sunday after being shot in what officials said was a drive-by shooting in Minneapolis.

The Guard said the injuries were minor. One Guard member was brought to a hospital for treatment of injuries from broken glass; the other was treated at the scene for superficial wounds.

The Guard explained the two were part of a "neighborhood security team" stationed in Minneapolis for Operation Safety Net, a multi-agency aim to provide security amid the ongoing Derek Chauvin trial. Operation Safety Net further has responded to protests over last weekend's fatal police shooting of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center.

The state of Minnesota and local jurisdictions to “protect people, freedom of speech and property during the Derek Chauvin trial as well as the aftermath of the police involved shooting of Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center.”

The shooting occurred at around 4:19 a.m. near the corner of Penn Avenue North and Broadway, when shots were fired from a light-colored SUV.

"I am relieved to know none of our Guardsmen were seriously injured," Maj. Gen. Shawn Manke, adjutant general of the Minnesota National Guard, announced in a news release. "This event highlights the volatility and tension in our communities right now. I ask for peace as we work through this difficult time."

Gov. Tim Walz told CNN affiliate WCCO he spoke with the two injured guardsmen -- one of whom he said he previously served with in a National Guard unit.

"They are OK," Walz explained. "But it highlights how dangerous the situation can get."

In addition to the Guard, Operation Safety Net includes the Minneapolis Police Department, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol, among other agencies.

On April 11, the 20-year-old Wright was killed by police in Brooklyn Center, Minn. The local police chief, who later resigned, said he believes the officer meant to draw her Taser but mistakenly pulled her gun instead.

A Chicago police officer shot and killed 13-year-old Adam Toledo last month. The body camera footage of the shooting was released on Thursday.
