Fox News’s Neil Cavuto directly asked Cheney, the third-highest ranking Republican in the House, if she would back Trump in 2024 on his show, Mediaite reported.
“I would not,” Cheney replied.
Cheney was one of 10 House Republicans to vote for Trump’s impeachment after the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.
Cheney told Cavuto that Trump’s efforts leading up to the disorder “was the gravest violation of an oath of office by any president in American history."

“We can’t embrace insurrection. We can’t minimize what happened on Jan. 6,” she continued.
Trump beforehand went after Cheney after her impeachment vote, prompting Republicans to vote her out of office.
Trump and Cheney have traded barbs in the past, representing the deepening rift within the GOP between Trump loyalists and GOP lawmakers who have distanced themselves from the former president.

Nikki Haley and Senate Minority leader Mitch McConnell, who have criticized Trump for instigating the insurrection on January 6, have said they would support Trump should he win the GOP nomination.

“So hopefully they’ll get rid of her with the next election,” Trump declared. “Get rid of ‘em all.”
Cheney announced after her impeachment vote that Trump does “not have a role as a leader of our party going forward.”

Trump has neither ruled out nor verified that he would attempt to run for the presidency again in 2024.
Cheney, who is gearing up for reelection in 2022, has raised a substantial amount of money notwithstanding calls from Trump to get her out of office, raking in $1.5 million in the first quarter of 2021.

Trump also seized on comments from Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), another Republican who voted for impeachment, who said she is still weighing whether to mount a reelection bid in 2022, calling her hesitance “great news” for the GOP. “There is a chance that she won’t run! Wouldn’t that be great?” he added.

“Why is Cheney a lone voice in the wilderness when it comes to not wanting Trump to run again and not being willing to back him if he does? If not for principled reasons, then for political ones? As in, it's hard to see how Trump could possibly win a majority of the vote in the country if he was the Republican presidential nominee in 2024,” wrote CNN Editor-at-large Chris Cillizza.
