Departing CNN anchor Brooke Baldwin scrutinized the news network on her way out the door, suggesting not enough was done by the company to ensure equal opportunities for women.

"The most influential anchors on our network, the highest-paid, are men,” Baldwin revealed on the Ms. Magazine podcast this week. “My bosses, my executives, are men. The person who oversees CNN Dayside is a man, and my executive producer for 10 years is a man. So I’ve been surrounded by a lot of men.”

Indeed, CNN is the only major cable news network in America without a female primetime host and many of the network’s high-powered executives are men. Baldwin said she sees the landscape changing as more women appear on cable news, but she mostly teamed with men during her career.

"I know I, personally, fight for women’s stories," Baldwin said, noting she leaves a poster from her CNN series "American Women" hanging in her office as a reminder she was able to complete the project.

"I was surrounded by a lot of dudes," Baldwin declared, adding that she was told “no a lot” while working on her CNN series American Women.

Baldwin did note that the network is starting to get better “little by little” at providing opportunities for women but that more needs to be done.

"It’s getting better, but we still have a bit of a ways to go," she said. "I want more women in the room."

During the interview, Baldwin also fawned over outspoken liberals Gloria Steinem, Stacey Abrams, Ava DuVernay and Megan Rapinoe as "trailblazing women" she's interviewed. Baldwin has long come off as a liberal despite being labeled a straight-news anchor by CNN, but she appears to be letting her guard down on the way out.

In 2018, Hollywood trade publication "TheWrap" analyzed weekday programming on various networks and found CNN didn’t have as many female anchors as competitors.

"CNN has significantly fewer women serving in visible on-air roles than either Fox News or MSNBC," TheWrap reported.

Baldwin, arguably the most high-profile woman CNN when the 2018 study was conducted, is now exiting.

Baldwin announced in February that her 13-year run at CNN was coming to an end after cryptic Instagram posts last year indicated she was being forced off the air in favor of fellow CNN anchor Jake Tapper.

"As the election gears up, the political maestro @jaketapper will hold down my hour and his for the coming weeks. Wish I was with you, but I’ll see ya on [TV] on the flip side of the election," Baldwin tweeted back in October.

"Why are you taking so many weeks off at such an important time?" one fan asked her, prompting a response of "Not my choice” from Baldwin.

CNN, the only cable news network without a female host in its prime-time lineup, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
