More than 10 rockets targeted a military base in western Iraq that has U.S.-led alliance troops on Wednesday, the coalition and the Iraqi military said. It was not instantly revealed if there were any casualties.

The rockets hit Ain al-Asad airbase in Anbar province at 7:20 a.m., Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman Col. Wayne Marotto said, adding that the Iraqi security forces are launching an investigation into the strike.

After that, the Iraqi military issued a statement saying the attack did not generate significant injuries and that security forces had found the launch pad used for the attack.

It was the first attack since the U.S. hit Iran-aligned militia targets along the Iraq-Syria border last week, prompting concerns of a potential repeat of a string of attacks that intensified last year, ending in the U.S.-directed strike that killed Iranian Qassem Soleimani—the top commander of Iran’s foreign operations and the Quds Force—outside the Baghdad airport.

The U.S. strike along the Iraq-Syria border had been in answer to a spate of rocket attacks that targeted the American presence, including one that killed a coalition contractor from the Philippines outside the Erbil airport.

After that attack, the Pentagon said the strike was a “proportionate military response” taken after asking coalition partners.

Wednesday’s attack comes two days before Pope Francis’ is scheduled to visit Iraq in a much-anticipated tour that will include Baghdad, southern Iraq, and the northern city of Erbil.

A group of some 1,800 former IDF and Mossad officials wrote a letter to US President Joe Biden requesting from him to not re-enter the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, the Jewish News Syndicate reported on Monday.

The Security Movement NGO, which covers retired Israeli generals and spies, suggested that the possibility was an "existential threat" to Israel.

The letter said that the group's members were affected by the White House's course on replying to the 2015 accord, which former President Donald Trump departed from.

They condemned the agreement as "flawed" and cautioned that the US rejoining it would leave Israel and the moderate Sunni states, which see Iran as a common threat, cornered up in a tight spot.

This would ultimately result in a dramatic nuclear arms race in the area, they suggested, urging Bide to follow his predecessor's maximum pressure policy and keep Iran under heavy sanctions.

While asserting its intention to return to the deal, the White House is not on the same side as Iran on how to continue with the prospect.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has repeatedly demanded that the US must make the first step by removing the severe sanctions.

The US, for its part, has insisted that it is Iran who must first reverse its previous violations of the agreement.

Biden has always been very delicate with Iran as if he is not aware of the imminent threat they pose to the U.S and Israel.
