Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said he would back former President Donald Trump if he were to take the Republican Party's presidential race in the 2024 election.

On Thursday, McConnell told Fox News's Bret Baier that if Trump were the candidate, he would "absolutely" back him, just weeks after Trump and McConnell had been denouncing each other.

McConnell dismissed allegations of there being an internal war within the GOP, between the lawmakers who attach themselves to Trump and those who want to move on from the bold former president and took a more firm position.

"I think the Biden administration is making it easy for us to get together," McConnell said. "I think we've unified in opposition to this new administration's extremely progressive approach."

Trump, who is expected to speak at CPAC this weekend, recently referred to McConnell as a "dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack" in a statement released by his Save America PAC.

The former president excoriated McConnell after the lawmaker linked Trump to the riot that took place in the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, ending in the deaths of five people.

Trump was later impeached by the Democratic-led House on a charge of "incitement of insurrection" concerning the tumult, but he was cleared by the Senate.

When asked if McConnell has any words of advice for Trump when he delivers his speech on Sunday, the leader immediately dismissed the question.

"I don’t have any advice to give the former president about where he should speak or what he should say," McConnell said.

Trump's appearance at CPAC will be his first significant public appearance since he left office last month. Since departing the Oval Office, Trump has only appeared on cable TV to comment about the death of Rush Limbaugh and the car crash that left golfer Tiger Woods hospitalized.

Small details have been released about Trump's speech at CPAC, which is themed "America Uncanceled." The former president, though, is expected to call out President Biden and possibly tease a potential 2024 presidential run, according to a person familiar with the speech who spoke with the Hill.

Trump is also expected to make it clear that he will not quit politics and will remain active throughout the 2022 midterm elections.

The two disputed early in Trump’s presidency after the Senate failed to repeal and substitute Obamacare following the narrow passage of that legislation in the House. Both chambers were then under Republican control.

But Trump soon came to appreciate McConnell’s legislative savvy after he guided three of his Supreme Court candidates to hearings and helped beat back the first Democratic impeachment drive. Just a year ago, Trump praised his original acquittal with McConnell and other congressional Republicans at the White House.

“And Mitch McConnell, I want to tell you: You did a fantastic job,” Trump said as GOP lawmakers applauded. “This guy is great, and I appreciate it, Mitch.”
