The San Francisco school board has voted to cut California Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s name, among others, from their school buildings.

Forty-four schools whose namesakes the board believed to have shameful histories were dropped, including Feinstein Elementary School, John Muir Elementary, Lincoln High, Lowell High, Roosevelt Middle, and Washington High, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Feinstein, the first female mayor of San Francisco and a lifelong Democrat, was the single living person whose name was brought up for removal. The elementary school named after Feinstein will change its name over claims she initially replaced a damaged Confederate flag that was part of an 18-banner historical display outside of City Hall when she was mayor of San Francisco in 1984.

The flag had been part of the display 14 years before Feinstein took office. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, she did not replace the flag after it was brought down a second time by rebels, and she stated it would not fly another time.

While the removal of Confederate soldier monuments was the focus of Black Lives Matter protests across the nation, activism to scrutinize and scorn U.S. presidents such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, William McKinley, James Garfield, and other notable figures in U.S. history followed.

A volunteer panel named by the Board of Education three years ago kicked off the process of the renaming of the schools, and a “blue-ribbon panel” examined all 114 school names, paying significant attention to names of people “who engaged in the subjugation and enslavement of human beings,” or who “oppressed women,” or whose “actions led to genocide,” or who “otherwise significantly diminished the opportunities of those amongst us to the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” the resolution announced.

Mayor London Breed rebuked the project in October as "offensive," stating the school board should be directed on reopening schools closed throughout the pandemic rather than renaming them.

"It’s offensive to parents who are juggling their children’s daily at-home learning schedules with doing their own jobs and maintaining their sanity," she said at the time, according to Courthouse News. "It’s offensive to me as someone who went to our public schools, who loves our public schools, and who knows how those years in the classroom are what lifted me out of poverty and into college. It’s offensive to our kids who are staring at screens day after day instead of learning and growing with their classmates and friends."

Replacing signage at the 44 schools will cost more than $400,000, according to Courthouse News. The price tag could likewise grow to around $1 million for schools to get new activity uniforms, repaint gymnasium floors.
