Google on Monday announced that its political action committee will not make any donations during this election cycle to members of Congress who voted against certifying the 2020 presidential election or who expressed some interest in the 'stolen election' theory via social media or speeches - effectively shutting out conservative candidates from big-techs largest source of lobbying cash.

“Following that review, the NetPAC board has decided that it will not be making any contributions this cycle to any member of Congress who voted against certification of the election results,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement to Axios and other news outlets.

Nonetheless, the company up until Jan. 7 — after the insurgence — allowed some of the same lawmakers and Trump to recite voter fraud falsehoods on Google-owned YouTube. Trump’s YouTube home page still automatically plays a 46-minute video rife with false allegations of voter fraud. It has been up for a month and has nearly 6 million views.

Journalist Judd Legum, author of the newsletter Popular Information, on Tuesday wrote that Google's decision is "significant" because it "makes it harder for other companies not to act."

Confirming Legum’s prediction, other Big Tech firms such as Microsoft and Facebook have also paused political donations to candidates.

“Microsoft confirmed publicly today, as it announced internally on Jan. 8, that it has halted all donations of its PAC while it reviews whether to suspend further donations to individuals who voted against certification of the Electoral College,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post on Jan. 23. “The company added that it will announce its decision by Feb. 15 after completing discussions with its employees. As Microsoft executives have said internally to employees, this is not a normal year. The company believes that opposition to the Electoral College undermined American democracy and should have consequences.”

Facebook as well announced that it is “pausing all of our PAC contributions for at least the current quarter, while we review our policies,” according to a statement sent to news outlets earlier this month.

Several major businesses paused or pulled political donations following the events of Jan. 6, when pro-Trump rioters, riled up by former President Trump, stormed the Capitol on the day it was to certify the election results.

Following the incident, Republicans in Congress faced blowback from several corporate firms who paused campaign donations and said they were reviewing their policies. Amazon.com, AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon Communications are all among the many big companies who have threatened to throttle fundraising resources for Republicans. AT&T and Comcast, for example, are among the biggest corporate donors in Washington.
