The United States on Friday imposed sanctions on firms in Iran, China, and the United Arab Emirates for trading with the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines and on three Iranian entities over conventional arms proliferation.

They are the latest in a list of sanctions intended to step up the weight on Tehran.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced Washington had sanctioned seven firms, including Chinese-based Jiangyin Mascot Special Steel Co and UAE-based Accenture Building Materials, and two people for shipping steel to or from Iran.

In a statement later on Friday, Pompeo announced he was further expanding the range of metals-related sanctions against Iran imposed by the State Department.

Those who deliberately transfer 15 materials which the State Department says are used in connection with Iran’s nuclear, military or ballistic missile programs, including particular types of aluminum and steel, would be subject to sanctions, he explained.

Throughout his four years in office, U.S. President Donald Trump has attempted to push Tehran back into discussions over its nuclear and ballistic missile programs and its actions in the Middle East. Announcing the agreement did not go far enough, Trump in 2018 left an Iran nuclear deal, which Tehran struck with world powers in 2015 to rein in its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.

Democratic President-elect Joe Biden has stated he will rejoin the 2015 nuclear deal if Iran returns to strict compliance with it.

In fact, officials in the incoming Biden administration have already started holding quiet talks with Iran on a return to the 2015 nuclear agreement, and have informed Israel on those discussions.

US President-elect Joe Biden is assumed to take a more agreeable approach to Iran than the Trump administration and has announced that if Iran returns to the terms of the 2015 nuclear agreement, he too would go back, taking off the crushing economic sanctions that have wreaked havoc on the Iranian economy over the past two years.
