Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) is going back to the House Homeland Security Committee notwithstanding anxieties about his ties to a purported Chinese spy, while rising Democrat Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) will be a member of the House Financial Services Committee, as was announced Thursday.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) declared a bunch of new appointments, including Swalwell and Reps. Al Green (D-Texas) and Elaine Luria (D-Va.) to the Homeland Security Committee.

Ocasio-Cortez, recognized as AOC, will work on the Financial Services Committee along with Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), another member of the so-called “Squad.” The grouping is of so-called Democratic socialists who are trying to change the Democratic Party more to the left.

Other appointments include Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) to the Agriculture Committee, Rep. Stephanie Murphy (D-Fla.) to the Armed Services Committee, and Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) to the Education and Labor Committee.

“In the election, the American people elected a Democratic House Majority that not only will ensure that our nation recovers from this historic pandemic and economic crisis, but will Build Back Better,” Pelosi announced. “As House Speaker, I am pleased to announce the appointments of these outstanding Members to key Committees, where they will be relentless in leading Democrats’ work to combat disparities in our economy and country and to advance justice and progress For The People.”

Some appointments were confirmed earlier this month. Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.), a Black Lives Matter activist, will follow progressives Tlaib and Ocasio-Cortez on the Oversight and Reform Committee while Democratic socialist Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.), who replaced longtime Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), will be a member of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee.

Rep. Kai Kahele (D-Hawaii), who succeeded Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) after she refused to run for reelection, will be on the Armed Services Committee.

Pelosi last week announced full appointments to the House Rules Committee. Chairman Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) gripped the seat. Eight Democrats will be members of the committee, among them, Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), Mark DeSaulnier (D-Calif.), and Ed Perlmutter (D-Colo.).

Pelosi, 80, has been attacked by Ocasio-Cortez, 31, and others for not taking the younger members into leadership roles.

Last month, the New York congresswoman explained that, "I think one of the things that I have struggled with — I think that a lot of people struggle with — is [that] the internal dynamics of the House has made it such that there’s very little option for succession if you will."

She stated she believed it was time for new and younger leadership to take over for Pelosi and incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, 70.
